Root-Trained Fruit Tree

Lineage: Wild-Harvested Texas Native | Soil: Organic Heritage Mineral Blend

The Living Sculpture of the Hill Country

Our Texas Persimmon (Diospyros texana)—often called Mexican Persimmon or "Chapote"—is an Artisan Grown masterpiece of form and function. This isn't just a tree; it is a slow-burn investment in the permanent beauty of your landscape. Famous for its smooth, slate-grey bark that peels away to reveal shades of pink, white, and gold beneath, the Texas Persimmon is widely considered the most beautiful small tree native to the Edwards Plateau.

The Process

Genetic Proximity

We begin with our surroundings. Every tree we grow starts as a seed hand-harvested from vigorous, wild-growing mature trees found on our ranch or within a strict 10-mile radius. This ensures our plants carry the specific site-adapted genetics required to handle the unique mineral profile and erratic weather of the Dripping Springs and Austin corridor. By selecting from the "survivor" trees on our local hilltops, we ensure your Persimmon is biologically prepared for the thin, alkaline soils of the Hill Country.

The Start

Texas Persimmon is defined by its deep, sensitive taproot. To ensure the deepest and strongest root system, we sow our wild-harvested seeds directly into our 4” by 12” Deep Tree Pots filled with our Organic Heritage Mineral Blend. These pots are then sunk into outdoor silica sand beds. This "Earth-Link" method allows the seedling to grow in a stable, thermally protected environment while forcing the taproot to drive deep and vertical from day one. By never moving the plant during its infancy, we preserve the integrity of the root system, creating a tree that is structurally superior and ready to anchor into rocky Hill Country limestone.

The Hardening: A 18-Month Ranch Immersion

Over the coarse of 18 months on our hilltop, these young trees experience the full range of Hill Country extremes, including freezing and scorching gale force winds. As the trees transition into their final phase, their dappled shade is removed without moving the pots to allow them to field-harden in unapologetic full sun. This multi-phase approach ensures every Texas Persimmon leaving our ranch has been "performance-tested" and is biologically prepared for a resilient, irrigation-free Hill Country life once established.

Aesthetic & Versatility:

A multi-seasonal specimen tree that provides architectural elegance and high-value wildlife support.

  • Exfoliating Art: As the tree matures, its bark becomes its most striking feature—peeling away in thin sheets to reveal a multi-colored trunk that looks more like a modern sculpture than a tree.

  • The "Black Gold" Fruit: Female trees produce small, round fruits that turn from green to a deep, jet-black when ripe. These edible fruits are a favorite of local wildlife and can be used to make a native fruit plate, traditional "Persimmon leather," or a unique, dark purple dye.

  • Compact Power: Reaching a typical height of 10-15 feet, it is the perfect "understory" tree for small urban lots or as a focal point in a modern contemporary courtyard.

  • Deer-Resistant & Rugged: Once established, its leathery, green leaves are remarkably resistant to browsing, making it a reliable choice for open-range ranch landscapes.

Your Plant:

Field-grown, sun-hardened, and air-pruned. Delivered in a 4” by 12” Deep Tree Pot with a vertical, robust root system designed to anchor deep into our rocky Hill Country soil, ensuring this slow-growing icon returns with more vigor and beauty year after year.

Planting Tips:

Texas Persimmon is the definition of drought-tolerant. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and requires excellent drainage—it is at its happiest when planted in rocky, limestone-rich soil. To maximize the visual impact of its stunning bark, prune away lower branches as it grows to "limb up" the tree and reveal the multi-colored trunk.

The Rancher’s Secret:

For a high-end "Contemporary" look, plant a cluster of 3 Texas Persimmons as a focal point and under-plant them with our Silver Ponyfoot. The multi-planting helps ensure male and female trees are planted together to cross-pollinate and produce the edible black fruit. The shimmering silver carpet of the Ponyfoot provides a clean, neutral base that makes the slate-grey and pink tones of the Persimmon bark truly pop, creating a landscape that looks intentional, wild, and sophisticated all at once.

Our plants are intentionally cultivated to be site-adapted and focus their energy on growing larger, faster, and healthier below ground so they can take-off above ground once planted. All plants are grown to prioritize dense, downward-oriented root systems that allow rapid establishment in non-irrigated, deer-pressured landscapes.

Water and cage until established. Even for deer resistant plants, expect browsing, especially during drought — survival comes from the roots.
